Filipino climate groups rallied outside the Japanese Embassy in Manila to denounce what they called Japan’s “fossil fuel obsession” and its promotion of false climate solutions.
Protesters warned that these energy policies worsen the climate crisis and harm communities across Asia.
The demonstrators, led by the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), and allied groups, staged the protest ahead of the Japan Energy Summit in Tokyo, set for June 18 to 20.
The annual summit is organized by Japanese energy giants JERA and Tokyo Gas.
Activists accused the summit of “greenwashing” Japan’s continued investment in coal, gas, and other dirty energy projects. APMDD’s Lidy Nacpil also called for urgent investment in solar and wind energy.
