Army Reports Clash with NPA in Eastern Samar, One Killed

CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar — Government troops from the 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division of the Philippine Army clashed with suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Borongan City, Eastern Samar, on June 15, resulting in the death of one armed insurgent.

The 15-minute encounter took place in the hinterlands of Sitio Bagong Bario, Barangay Pinanag-an, following reports from local residents about armed individuals allegedly extorting food supplies. The 63rd Infantry “Innovator” Battalion launched a focused military operation in response to the reports.

The slain NPA member was identified as Jomar Discar, alias Guimo/Bobby, who was reportedly left behind by his companions.

Recovered from the site were one M653 rifle, five short magazines, a bandolier, three backpacks, and subversive documents.

Military officials believe the group involved is part of the remnants of the Sub-Regional Committee Sesame of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC).

Brigadier General Noel A. Vestuir, Commander of the 802nd Infantry Brigade, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased but reiterated the military’s call for remaining NPA members to surrender.

“We have been clear in our appeal to them to lay down their arms. We will continue to pursue those who remain in armed struggle,” Vestuir said.

Major General Adonis Ariel G. Orio, Commander of the 8ID, attributed the successful operation to community support and cooperation.

“The people are speaking out against the presence of armed groups in their communities. This partnership between civilians and the military is vital in restoring peace and order,” Orio said.

oOrio also urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities and encouraged NPA members to return to the fold of the law through the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).
