CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines – The province of Samar has been officially declared under a state of calamity as of August 21 due to a dramatic increase in dengue fever cases.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed Resolution No. 17-906-24, implementing the state of calamity in response to the surge in reported dengue cases.
Health officials in Samar reported that the total number of dengue cases has surged to 2,013, as indicated in the surveillance report for August 4-10.
In light of the crisis, the public is advised to adhere to the 5S strategy for dengue prevention:
1) Search and Destroy: Eliminate mosquito breeding sites, such as stagnant water in containers.
2) Self-Protection: Use mosquito repellents to prevent bites.
3) Seek Early Consultation: Consult a healthcare professional if dengue symptoms appear.
4) Support Fogging Activities: Participate in efforts to reduce mosquito populations.
5) Sustain Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to manage symptoms.
The DOH said dengue fever is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water found in places like flower vases, cans, rain barrels, and old tires, and they often rest in dark, indoor areas.
The DOH urged Samar residents to be vigilant for symptoms of dengue, which include a sudden high fever lasting 2 to 7 days, joint and muscle pain, pain behind the eyes, weakness, skin rashes, nosebleeds as the fever declines, abdominal pain, dark-colored stools, and breathing difficulties. | The Samar Chronicle
