JIABONG, Philippines — On Sunday, January 26, 2024, a determined group of seasoned hikers from the Samar Mountaineering and Outdoor Club, Inc. (SAMOC) faced a formidable challenge in the rugged mountains of Jiabong, Samar.
What started as a regular hiking activity turned into an unforgettable journey to the summit of Mt. Toblerone, a peak known for its perilous terrain and breathtaking views. Despite the physical and mental toll, these passionate hikers triumphed, proving once again the power of teamwork, strength, and perseverance.
Rising 565 meters above sea level, Mt. Toblerone earned its name from the locals due to its distinctive triangular peaks, which resemble the shape of the famous Swiss chocolate. While not one of the tallest mountains in the region, the hike proved to be a tough challenge, with a rugged limestone terrain, loose rocks, and near-vertical inclines that made the ascent a test of skill, stamina, and resolve.
A Grueling Start
The group, led by Brylle O. General, a teacher by profession and an experienced mountaineer, set off early in the morning from Barangay Salvacion in Jiabong. They began their journey by paying courtesy to local officials, whose support was invaluable in arranging the logistics of the hike and providing the essential services of local guides. Ariel and Antonio Quegaman, both seasoned guides from the area, led the group through the dense forest over limestone rock formations, ensuring the hikers’ safety and guiding them through challenging sections of the trail.
“We didn’t expect it to be this tough,” shared General, who has led several hikes across the region. “It felt like we were training for something even bigger, like Mt. Apo. The trail was never-ending, and every time we thought we were near the top, it stretched further, pushing our limits.”
As they trekked deeper into the mountains, the group faced unpredictable weather, steep inclines, and rock-strewn paths that left little room for error. Still, the hikers remained motivated, drawing energy from their camaraderie and the striking natural beauty surrounding them.
A Test of Strength and Spirit
Among the group was Mark Chester Ilao, a seasoned hiker who had explored several trails across Samar but found Mt. Toblerone to be one of the toughest climbs he had faced.
“It was exhausting, but the view and the sense of accomplishment when we reached the summit made it all worth it,” Mark Chester recalled, his exhaustion giving way to pride.
“The team support was crucial. We were constantly helping each other, making sure no one was left behind.”
The trail required all hikers to rely on each other for encouragement, especially during the grueling stretches of the climb. “It was like a mental game,” said another participant.
“The physical exhaustion was real, but your mind has to be stronger than your body. When one of us felt like giving up, the others pushed through.”
By mid-afternoon, after five hours of relentless trekking, the hikers finally reached the summit. The panoramic 360-degree view from the top provided a rewarding sight: the sprawling landscapes of Jiabong and Catbalogan City in the distance, with a sea of green stretching as far as the eye could see. The summit’s flora, featuring agoho and pandanus plants, added a unique touch to the already awe-inspiring landscape.
A Humble Victory
For Brylle General, leading the group to the peak was more than just a personal victory—it was a shared triumph for the entire team. “I’m so happy we made it,” he said, smiling through the exhaustion.
“There were moments when I thought we wouldn’t be able to finish, but we did. And that’s what matters.”
As the group descended, they took breaks at various points to rehydrate and regain their strength. During the breaks, General kept the SAMOC community updated, posting pictures and progress updates in the club’s chat group. Reflecting on the hike, the group expressed gratitude not only for the successful climb but for the memories and bonds forged along the way. This hike wasn’t just about reaching the peak—it was about pushing past their physical limits, strengthening their teamwork, and exploring the potential of Samar’s wilderness for eco-tourism and mountaineering.
A Challenging, Yet Rewarding Experience
Local officials were equally proud of the group’s achievement, particularly since few have dared to take on Mt. Toblerone. “This mountain has always been a hidden gem for hikers,” said one of the local guides.
“But it’s not often that groups come to challenge it. Seeing them reach the summit was not only a success for them but a big boost for eco-tourism here in Jiabong.”
The trek to the peak was a grueling test of skill and endurance, and as the group neared the barangay proper on their descent, their sense of accomplishment was palpable. “While Mt. Toblerone is not recommended for beginners, the hike to Salvacion offers a fantastic alternative,” General shared.
“We also explored some of the other peaks in the area, which have a lot of potential for eco-tourism, mountaineering, and even caving.”
An Inspiring Future
With their successful climb of Mt. Toblerone, the SAMOC members are already looking ahead, excited to take on even more challenging mountains in the future. Their success has only deepened their passion for outdoor exploration, and the sense of accomplishment from conquering Mt. Toblerone will stay with them for years to come.
As they reached the bottom of the mountain and shared their final moments of camaraderie, the exhaustion was clear, but so was the satisfaction. Their smiles reflected the shared victory—another mountain conquered, and, more importantly, they had done it together.
The group included the following hikers: Brylle O. General, Mark Chester Ilao, Joan Truelda, Richard Mendoza, Anne Broderick, Antonio Rabi, Domingo Yangzon and two mountain guides Ariel and Antonio Quegaman.
