Teen suspect nabbed in Catbalogan theft and sextortion case

PALO, LEYTE – A 19-year-old suspect was arrested in Catbalogan City, Samar, following a swift police response to a reported case of theft and sextortion, the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8) announced on September 4.

The suspect, identified only by the alias “Jordan,” a resident of Barangay Canlapwas, was caught in Barangay 7 after allegedly attempting to extort sexual favors from a female student in exchange for the return of her stolen mobile phone.

The victim, a 22-year-old woman also from Barangay Canlapwas and referred to as “Shay,” had reported her phone missing on August 16. She later received a message from the suspect, who was in possession of the device and demanded sexual acts in return for giving it back.

Before agreeing to meet the suspect, the victim sought help from a witness to help facilitate the recovery and report the incident. During the arranged meeting, the witness apprehended the suspect and alerted nearby police personnel.

Officers from the Catbalogan City Police Station, who were on routine patrol, responded promptly and took the suspect into custody.

Police Regional Director Brig. Gen. Jason L. Capoy commended the quick response of the Catbalogan police. “Their immediate action shows how community presence and proactive patrolling play a vital role in preventing and responding to crimes. We encourage the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement to ensure a safer Eastern Visayas,” he said in a statement.

The suspect is currently detained at the Catbalogan City Police Station while criminal charges are being prepared. (rjb)
