DILG urges LGUs to enforce pre-emptive evacuation ahead of ‘Pepito’

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has called on local government units (LGUs) in Luzon and Visayas to enforce pre-emptive and forced evacuation protocols in areas at high risk of flooding, landslides, and storm surges as Tropical Cyclone Pepito approaches.

In a memorandum issued Friday, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla directed LGUs to prioritize the safety of residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, expectant mothers, and persons with disabilities. The Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) have been ordered to assist local chief executives in implementing evacuation efforts.

“Lives are at stake. LGUs must ensure that evacuation centers meet safety standards and are equipped with sanitation and medical facilities,” Remulla emphasized, urging preparedness amid forecasts of heavy rainfall and potential dam water discharges that could impact downstream communities.

The DILG also directed LGUs to coordinate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs) to prepare and distribute relief supplies to affected residents.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Pepito could intensify into a Super Typhoon before making landfall this weekend, bringing torrential rains and triggering moderate to high-risk storm surges in several coastal areas.

The DILG stressed that early action is crucial to avoid casualties, and reminded LGUs to stay vigilant, prioritize communication with affected communities, and activate emergency response teams.

“Preparedness is key to saving lives,” Remulla said. “Let us act now.”
