CATBALOGAN, Philippines — This Christmas, a father’s deepest wish was granted, bringing his son home after years of separation. Ruben Magcoro, a former member of the New People’s Army (NPA), finally returned to his family, thanks to the heartfelt efforts of the Philippine Army’s 802nd Infantry Brigade.
For years, Tatay Rommy Magcoro dreamed of seeing his son, known as Ara, come back to the fold of the law and find peace. Ara, a former squad leader in the now-dismantled Apoy Platoon of the NPA, had long been separated from his family. But this Christmas, his father’s wish was realized through the “Wish Upon a Star” program, a heartfelt initiative that bridges the gap between former rebels and their families.
The 78th Infantry Battalion, led by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bugaoan, worked tirelessly to reach out to members of the NPA, including Ara. They visited the remote barangay of Tabay in Hinabangan, Samar, offering hope and assistance to those willing to lay down their arms and return to a peaceful life.
Through outreach efforts, the army reassured former rebels that the government was ready to help them reintegrate into society, offering not just safety, but also opportunities for a fresh start.
Ara’s surrender was the result of many hands working together: the Philippine Army, local government units, and local leaders. To help Ara and his wife, Lorry, restart their lives, the government provided financial support and a livelihood program.
They converted a “pangkabuhayan showcase” into a small sari-sari store, giving the couple a chance to rebuild their future together.
Brigadier General Noel A. Vestuir PA, commander of the 802nd Infantry Brigade, expressed his gratitude for the support the program has received and urged other NPA members to consider the possibility of reconciliation. He reminded everyone that peace is not just the absence of conflict, but the result of collective effort and community understanding.
