CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines – The military troops recovered a buried rifle and magazines belonging to the New People’s Army (NPA) in the remote area of Barangay Old Union, Sta. Rita, Samar on August 26, 2024.
Soldiers from the 63rd Infantry Battalion (63IB), operating under the 802nd Infantry Brigade (802IBde), discovered the concealed weapons following a tip-off from local residents.
The community’s alert led to a comprehensive search by the soldiers.
Lieutenant Colonel Eduardo Meclat Jr., Acting Commanding Officer of the 63IB, directed his troops to investigate the lead, resulting in the successful recovery of a Bushmaster 5.56mm rifle and three empty magazines, among other related equipment.
Lieutenant Colonel Meclat highlighted the crucial role of community cooperation in the success of the operation.
“The discovery of this firearm underscores the vital partnership between the military and local communities in ensuring security,” he said.
Meclat encouraged continued collaboration between the community and government to maintain a safe and secure environment for all.
Brigadier General Noel A. Vestuir, Commander of the 802IBde, commended the troops for their dedication to maintaining peace and security. He also expressed appreciation for the local residents’ cooperation and vigilance, which were essential in achieving this success.
