CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines – Troops from the 52nd Infantry Battalion of the Army’s 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division engaged with New People’s Army guerillas in the hinterlands of Barangay Lonoy, Gamay, Northern Samar on July 18, 2024.
According to a report released on Friday (July 19) by Capt. Jefferson Mariano, chief of the Division Public Affairs Office of the 8th Infantry Division in Brgy. Maulong, the operation was prompted by reports from concerned citizens regarding armed individuals believed to be members of the Regional Guerilla Unit (RGU) from the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) seen in the passing through the outskirts of Barangay Lonoy.
Following the encounter, the troops successfully seized two M16 rifles, 13 ponchos, and other personal belongings belonging to the insurgents.
The rebels, however, escaped. No one from both sides was reported hurt during the 30-minute encounter.
The Commanding Officer of the 52nd Infantry Battalion credited the operation’s success to timely and relevant information provided by local residents.
“We are thankful for the cooperation of the people of Gamay, Northern Samar, especially those from Barangays Lonoy and GM Osias. Their vigilance and proactive reporting of Communist New People’s Army Terrorists (CNTs) in their communities are crucial in maintaining peace and advancing development,” said Lt. Col. Garcia.
Meanwhile, Major General Camilo Z. Ligayo, Commander of the 8th Infantry Division, commended the residents for their support and cooperation in the government’s efforts toward peace.
“The residents’ cooperation with government troops demonstrates their liberation from the deceit of Communist Terrorist Groups. The community’s involvement is pivotal in our sustained efforts to end the insurgency that has persisted for decades, and we appreciate their support for our campaigns and initiatives,” Maj. Gen. Ligayo emphasized.
Maj. Gen. Ligayo reaffirmed the military’s commitment to continuing operations against evading rebel groups.
“We are resolute in our pursuit of peace. Rest assured, we will persist in our operations to decisively address these threats. To those who wish to surrender, our troops stand ready to assist you as you reintegrate into society,” Maj. Gen. Ligayo concluded.
