The Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) launched the “Asian Peoples’ Petition for Wealth Tax for Public Services & Climate Action” in Quezon City on Sept. 2, 2024.
This regional campaign seeks to rally support across Asia, urging governments to adopt and implement wealth tax policies aimed at reducing inequality and funding essential public services.
Key figures at the event included Lidy Nacpil, APMDD Coordinator; Dr. Arjun Karki, International Coordinator of LDC Watch; Jeannie Manipon, Senior Program Manager of APMDD’s Development Finance Program; and Luke Espiritu, President of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP). Civil society leaders from various Asian countries, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines, also participated.
The campaign aims to collect 1 million signatures from concerned individuals across Asia, beginning with the supporters of participating organizations. A public launch is scheduled for October 2024.
