CALBAYOG CITY, May 5, 2024 – The Schools Division of Calbayog has once again clinched the championship title in the recently concluded 2024 Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) held from May 1 to 4, 2024.
After days of intense competition, Calbayog emerged as the overall top-performing division in the regional journalism contest, successfully defending their championship from the previous year.
Under the leadership of OIC-Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Margarito Cadayona Jr., and OIC-Assistant Schools Superintendent Dr. Jun-Nilou Dulfo, along with CID Chief Dr. Renato Cagomoc, and Education Program Supervisors Dr. Erwin Purcia and Dr. Lourdes Matan, Calbayog City Division showcased exceptional talent and dedication.
A total of 13 schools divisions from Region VIII participated in the competition, with the winners earning the opportunity to represent the region at the National Schools Press Conference.
The final standings are as follows: Leyte Division – 1st Place, Eastern Samar Division – 2nd Place, Tacloban City Division – 3rd Place, Biliran Division – 4th Place, and Southern Leyte Division – 5th Place.

This year’s competition adopted the theme: “Aligning Campus Journalism with Matatag Agenda: Breaking Down Barriers of Isolation, Indifference and Mediocrity; Building Up Support for Inclusion, Collaboration, and Excellence.”
The RSPC 2024 first-place winners will represent Region 8 in the prestigious National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) 2024 scheduled to be held in Cebu City.
The contest judges were outstanding print and broadcast personalities, as well as educators in Eastern Visayas.
Calbayog Division’s consistent success showcases their dedication to excellence and their ability to adapt to evolving journalistic standards, making them back-to-back champions.
The competition is governed by Republic Act 7079, The Campus Journalism Act of 1991, which aims “to promote the development and growth of campus journalism as a means of strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal discipline of the Filipino youth.”
The participating contingents include: Catbalogan, Baybay, Borongan, Calbayog, Ormoc, Maasin, Tacloban, Samar, Leyte, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Biliran, and Southern Leyte. (With reports and photo from Calbayog City Information Office and The Stone)
