CATBALOGAN CITY — The Samar State University (SSU), in collaboration with the SSU – Office of Arts & Cultural Heritage Programs (ACHep), Social Studies Circle, DYSY 102.9 University Radio, and the Veterans Bank, will host the book launch of “DAUNTLESS” by US-based historian and author, Marie Silva Vallejo, on Friday, March 22, 2024, at the SSU College of Arts and Sciences – Audio Visual Center (CAS-AVC).
SSU officials extend an invitation to the public to join them in celebrating the courage and legacy of The First and Second Filipino Infantry Regiments, as well as the role of Samarnons in the Leyte Landing & Liberation during World War II.
The event will commence with a free-admission public lecture by Ms. Vallejo at 8:30 in the morning, highlighting the significant role of Samar in the Leyte Landing and Liberation during the Second World War.
During World War II, Samar played a crucial role in the Leyte landing and liberation. In October 1944, American forces, under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, launched a major amphibious assault on the island of Leyte, known as the Leyte landing. This event marked the beginning of the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation.
Samar, located adjacent to Leyte, served as a strategic location during the campaign. It was used as a staging area for troops and supplies heading to Leyte. The island also played a significant role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, one of the largest naval battles in history, which took place from October 23 to 26, 1944. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Allies and effectively ended Japanese naval power in the Pacific.
Additionally, Samar was a key point in the Leyte Landing Memorial National Park, which commemorates the historic event. The park features a museum and various memorials dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the battle.
The role of Samar in the Leyte landing and liberation is a significant part of Philippine history and is remembered as a crucial moment in the country’s struggle for freedom during World War II.
