Samar Capitol stands out in National Arts Month On-the-Spot Painting Contest

CATBALOGAN CITY — In celebration of National Arts Month, the Provincial Government of Samar partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) Samar Division, DepEd Catbalogan City Division, and DepEd Calbayog City Division to host an On-the-Spot Painting Contest on February 25, 2024, at the Provincial Capitol Grounds in Catbalogan City.

Ten Junior High School students participated in the contest, showcasing their talents by painting the Samar Provincial Capitol façade, a historical icon and an art piece in itself.

Judging criteria included Artistic Merit, Interpretation of the Theme, Difficulty or Technique, and Overall Impression of the Art.

Michael Jade Montes from Calbayog City National High School emerged as the 1st Placer, winning P7,000. Kate Botorres of Samar National School placed 2nd, receiving P5,000, while Clear Papauran of Sta. Margarita National High School was the 3rd Placer, awarded P4,000. Non-winning participants received consolation prizes of P2,000 each.

Other participating schools included Calbiga National High School, Basey National High School, Marabut National High School, Motiong National High School, Wright National High School, and Calbayog Arts and Design School Eastern Visayas.

National Arts Month is celebrated in February, as proclaimed by Presidential Proclamation No. 683 signed by then President Corazon Aquino in 1991. (With reports and photos from Golda Meir Tabao/Samar Public Information Office)
