Manicani Island Residents stages silent protest vs. Mining Operations on Manicani Island

MANICANI ISLAND, Guiuan, Eastern Samar — Residents of Manicani Island, alongside members of the Protect Manicani Island Society Incorporated (PROMISI), gathered in a silent protest at the Hinatuan Mining Corporation (HMC) campsite in Barangay Buenavista on March 12. The protest aimed to oppose HMC’s transition from care and maintenance to active mine operation phase.

Representatives from the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) joined the protest, reflecting the community’s concerns about the potential environmental and livelihood impacts of the resumed mining activities.

The silent protest highlighted the ongoing resistance against mining operations on the island, providing residents with a platform to voice their concerns to government agencies invited by HMC.

Support for the protest came from organizations such as the Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc.-Anti Mining Campaign (PMPI -AMC), Social Action Borongan, and Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), which advocate for sustainable development and environmental protection.

PROMISI and its partners remain committed to protecting the ecological integrity of Manicani Island and advocating for the rights of its residents. The silent protest symbolizes the community’s resilience as they strive for a balance between progress and preservation.
