CATBALOGAN CITY (May 11, 2024) — As soaring temperatures, surpassing 41 degrees Celsius, grip many regions of the Philippines, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) issues a stark warning to the public. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has consistently reported these extreme temperatures. According to PAGASA’s heat index, temperatures ranging from 33 to 41 degrees Celsius warrant “extreme caution,” while 42 to 51 degrees Celsius pose a “danger.”

The blistering heat heightens the likelihood of heat-related ailments, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, especially during the arid season. Vulnerable groups such as outdoor laborers, athletes, the elderly, children, expectant mothers, and individuals with chronic medical conditions are particularly at risk of experiencing heat-related illnesses.

PhilHealth’s Chief, Emmanuel R. Ledesma, Jr., underscores the gravity of heat stroke as a medical emergency. “In the event that members or their dependents require hospitalization due to heat stroke or heat exhaustion, PhilHealth extends a benefit package totaling P8,450,” emphasized Ledesma.

To mitigate the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, Ledesma urges the public to adopt precautionary measures. These include staying well-hydrated by consuming ample water, limiting exposure to high temperatures, dressing in lightweight, loose-fitting attire, utilizing hats or umbrellas for sun protection, and taking regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Additionally, PhilHealth encourages individuals to avail themselves of complimentary consultations and check-ups under the Konsulta or Konsultasyong Sulit package.

“At the onset of symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, vomiting, or light-headedness, it is imperative to seek prompt medical attention,” stated Ledesma. He highlighted the role of Konsulta Providers in facilitating patient evaluations and referrals to nearby healthcare facilities, emphasizing that members should register with a preferred Konsulta Provider to access primary care services, including diagnostic tests and medications for various health conditions.
