CATBALOGAN CITY — The city government of Catbalogan is joining the nationwide observance of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) this September, underscoring its commitment to sustainable maritime practices, coastal protection, and community engagement.
Mayor Dexter Uy said the month-long celebration serves as a timely reminder of the city’s deep-rooted connection to the sea and the urgent need to preserve marine resources amid ongoing environmental challenges.
“We are a coastal city with a strong maritime identity. Our seas are not only part of our heritage but also vital to our economy and way of life,” Uy said. “This observance is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our role in protecting and sustaining our marine environment.”
MANA Mo is held every September pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 316, s. 2017, which recognizes the Philippines as an archipelagic nation and aims to promote greater awareness of maritime and ocean affairs. The campaign is spearheaded by the National Coast Watch Council Secretariat, in partnership with local government units, civil society organizations, and stakeholders in the maritime sector.
In Catbalogan, the city government is promoting community involvement through activities focused on marine conservation and coastal stewardship. Among the initiatives is the “SEAtizen Friday” campaign, which encourages residents to wear blue every Friday of the month to show solidarity in protecting marine ecosystems.
Local officials are also urging residents to participate in environmental programs such as coastal cleanups, information drives on marine biodiversity, and discussions on maritime security and climate resilience.
Catbalogan, situated along the western coast of Samar, has long relied on its coastal waters for fishing, transportation, and trade. The city’s support for MANA Mo reflects ongoing efforts to balance development with environmental responsibility, especially in vulnerable coastal and island communities.
“With the threats posed by climate change and illegal activities in our waters, it’s essential that we work together to safeguard our marine resources—not just for today, but for future generations,” Mayor Uy said.
The city government is expected to hold several activities in partnership with local schools, fisherfolk associations, and civic groups throughout the month. (rjb)
