Samar Province Turns Over 17 ‘Saad nga Balay’ Housing Units to Former Rebels

CALBIGA, Samar – The Provincial Government of Samar formally turned over 17 Saad nga Balay housing units to former rebels who have embraced peace, during the 39th Founding Anniversary celebration of the 801st Brigade, 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, held on July 2, 2025.

Governor Sharee Ann Tan, who led the ceremonial turnover, commended the beneficiaries for choosing the path of peace and reintegration.

“To our former rebels, thank you for choosing a more peaceful life,” she said. “You are living proof of how your lives have improved since returning to the fold of the law.”

The governor also announced plans to expand the Saad nga Balay housing program to accommodate more qualified former rebels. She encouraged those still in armed struggle to consider surrendering and reintegrating into mainstream society.

During the event, seven additional housing units under the Saad nga Balay para ha Peacebuilders han San Jose de Buan were awarded to new beneficiaries, bringing the total number of completed houses in the area to 17. Each 150-square-meter unit was constructed at a cost of ₱250,000.

In Calbiga, 10 newly completed housing units were also turned over. These homes, built at ₱280,000 per unit, mark a separate batch of beneficiaries under the same program.

The housing turnover highlights the provincial government’s continued commitment to peacebuilding by supporting the reintegration and rehabilitation of former rebels into productive civilian life.
