Armed Encounter Occurs During Arrest Warrant Service; Suspect Killed

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines — A routine police operation in Calbayog City turned fatal on Sunday afternoon, August 11, 2024, when a shootout erupted while serving a warrant of arrest for a murder suspect in Purok 2, Brgy. Victory, Calbayog City, Samar.

The suspect, identified as alias “Danny,” a 50-year-old member of the Managaysay Potential Private Armed Groups (PPAGs), was wanted for murder under a warrant issued by the court on November 23, 2016. The court had denied bail for his charge.

The police said that when they served the warrant, the suspect resisted arrest and engaged in a confrontation. In the ensuing altercation, “Danny” was shot and sustained fatal injuries. Despite being rushed to Calbayog District Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.

The Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) and the Calbayog City Satellite Forensic Unit (CCFU) processed the scene, recovering a caliber .45 pistol with four live rounds and four cartridge cases. Cash and personal items found with the suspect were also documented for further investigation.

The operation was a collaborative effort involving the Provincial Intelligence Team Samar – Regional Intelligence Unit (PIT Samar-RIU) 8, the PNP Intelligence Group – Internal and Special Operations Division (IG-ISOD), 123SAC, 12SAB of the Special Action Force, and the Regional Intelligence Division (RID) 8 Tracker Team.

Police Brig. Gen. Reynaldo H. Pawid, PRO 8 Director, praised the teamwork of the various police units, underscoring their commitment to law enforcement and community safety.

“Our coordinated efforts to execute court orders and apprehend individuals with outstanding warrants reflect our dedication to justice and public safety. This ongoing collaboration is vital for reinforcing the rule of law and ensuring a secure environment for everyone,” Pawid said. | via Ricky Bautista
